Para este lunes renace una antigua sección en que combinamos un tema original con alguno de sus covers. Para este lunes los elegidos son dos grandes de la música: David Bowie y Peter Gabriel

Para 1977 David Bowie lanzaba Heroes, el disco que forma parte de la llamada «Trilogía de Berlín», aunque solo este disco fue enteramente grabado en esa ciudad. El tema que daba nombre al disco es una historia sobre dos amantes que se aman en ese Berlín divido por el Muro, una idea que nació cuando el cantante vio a una pareja a través de una ventana del estudio Hansa. Esa pareja no era otra que el productor Tony Visconti y la vocalista de la banda alemana Neu!, Antonia Maaß. Bowie nunca confirmó esta inspiración hasta el año 2003.

Para comenzar esta semana el Sonido Clásico retrocede a 1970 para mostrar un gran tema de la banda de rock progresivo Genesis.

Por esos años la banda estaba comenzando a hacerse un nombre en la escena musical, aunque con una formación bien distinta a como la conoceríamos después. En este disco es el único en el que aparece como miembro el baterista John Mayhew y el último con el guitarrista Anthony Phillips. Ambos serían reemplazados más adelante por Phil Collins y Steve Hackett, respectivamente.

Una diferencia con su disco anterior (From Genesis to Revelation) es la mayor complejidad de los temas, mucho más largos y con un sonido más progresivo.

The Knife, la canción elegida para este lunes, es una parodia de la arquetípica canción de protesta del rock. En el libro del periodista y fotógrafo italiano Armando Gallo llamado The evolution of a rock band (1978), Gabriel cuenta como nació el tema: «Las letras de The Knife fueron parcialmente escritas por mi cuando era un estudiante de escuela pública rebelándose contra su trasfondo. Había sido profundamente influenciado por un libro de Gandhi en la escuela, y creo que esa fue parte de la razón por la que me hice vegetariano, como también creía en la no-violencia, como una forma de protesta. Y quería intentar y mostrar como terminan inevitablemente todas las revolucionas violentas con una figura de un dictador en el poder.»

Trespass no fue un gran éxito comercial pero es reconocido como el disco que definió el sonido de Genesis.

Sonido Clásico: Peter Gabriel – Solsbury Hill (1977)

Para el día de hoy volvemos al año 1977 cuando Peter Gabriel había dejado hacia poco al grupo Genesis y comenzaba su carrera como solista. Del disco Peter Gabriel I recordamos Solsbury Hill.

Este tema fue el primer single de Gabriel en su etapa solista y en ella habla sobre su experiencia espiritual en Solsbury Hill (Inglaterra), además de contar lo que sentía al momento de alejarse de Genesis. La canción nos muestra una mezcla muy interesante de guitarra acústica acompañada del sonido de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Londres.

Solsbury Hill fue un buen comienzo para esta nueva etapa de la carrera de Gabriel, demostrando que lo mostrado en sus años en Genesis no fue casual, algo que se ha consolidado en todos estos años de buena música.

Los invito entonces a escuchar este gran tema de Peter Gabriel, música de excelente calidad en este día martes.

Disco Eterno: Genesis – Selling England by the Pound (1973)

El disco eterno de este mes es uno de los importantes de la banda de rock progresivo Genesis. En esta época (1973) Peter Gabriel estaba al mando de la banda por lo que la experimentación y la busqueda de nuevos sonidos se encontraba en un alto nivel.

Este disco tiene varias cosas interesantes. Partamos diciendo que fue el mayor éxito comercial de Genesis en la época de Gabriel, alcanzando el número 3 de los rankings en UK. Dentro de sus temas aparece el que para muchos fue el primer gran éxito comercial de la banda: «I Know What I Like». Otro tema interesante es el track 4 llamado «More Fool Me», el cual es el segundo tema que canta Phil Collins en esta primera etapa de la banda, además de no contar con teclados o piano en la grabación.

También en este disco Tony Banks utiliza por primera vez sintetizadores electrónicos, un instrumento muy usual en grabaciones posteriores del grupo.

Si hubiera que definir este disco debería decir que es un compendio de todo lo que fue el grupo en la época a cargo de Peter Gabriel, con interpretaciones magistrales de los instrumentos por parte de toda la banda, letras muy sugerentes y metafóricas que generan atmósferas envolventes. De verdad, estamos frente a un disco notable del rock progresivo.

Por todas estas razones Selling England by the Pound es un disco que debes tener en tu colección, escucharlo tranquilamente y disfrutar del talento de estos grandes músicos.

Raras Canciones Buenas: Peter Gabriel – Darkness (2002)

La canción con la que abrimos este semana pertenece a uno de los, a mi juicio, mejores discos de Peter Gabriel. Me refiero a Up, el cual fue lanzado en septiembre del año 2002.

En este disco Gabriel explora, principalmente, los temas de la muerte y los miedos, conjugando con maestría lo clásico con lo más electrónico, una mezcla perfecta entre esperanza y oscuridad.

Como mucha de la música que ha realizado en el último tiempo, las canciones de Up son complejas, alejadas de los estereotipos comerciales por los cuales se maneja el mercado de la música en el día de hoy. Por poner un ejemplo The Barry Williams Show, el primer single, debió ser lanzado en una versión editada para las radios debido a que dura 7 minutos y 16 segundos.

Darkness, tema que abre el disco, trata sobre los miedos que cada uno lleva dentro de si y de enfrentarse a ellos. Para muchos esta es una de las canciones más oscuras del repertorio de Gabriel, donde combina con la dosis justa los sonidos industriales y electrónicos, casi irritantes, para después pasar a la suavidad del piano acompañado por la London Session Orchestra.

Up es un disco que en Chile no fue tan masivo en cuanto a escuchas, pero los amantes de la buena musica sabemos que Peter Gabriel es sinónimo de un buen disco, de esos a los cuales les debemos poner atención si o si.

Así que sin más preludios los dejo con esta muy buena canción: Darkness.

En 1986 aparece en el mercado el disco So de Peter Gabriel, el cual se convertiria en uno de sus discos clásicos. En este album, Gabriel muestra una faceta más comercial en varias de sus canciones, las que llegarian a ocupar buenos lugares en los rankings entre 1986 y 1987.

In your eyers llegó al lugar 26 del Billboard, y es uno de los ejemplos de como Gabriel usa en sus canciones influencias etnicas, en este caso africanas, y donde colabora el cantante y percusionista senegalés Youssou N’Dour, quien es más conocido en occidente por la canción Seven Seconds (1994)
