1994 era el año en que el grunge aún permanecía fuerte, pese al suicidio de Kurt Cobain, ícono de quienes teníamos entre 14-20 años por esa época. Pearl Jam demostraba con su disco Vitalogy que el rock, y el grunge, aún tenían buena salud.

Eddie Vedder siempre ha comentado que el tema esta escrito por el amor que la banda siente hacia los discos de vinilo. Mucha gente piensa que el tema es una comparación entre la adicción a la droga y la adicción a la música, principalmente por un error en la interpretación de la letra en su primer verso.

En los primeros años de la década del ’90 la tendencia predominante en el mundo de la música era el grunge. Por eso llamó la atención que una banda caracterizada por su tendencia a melodias oscuras como The Cure lanzara un tema de fuertes características pop: Friday I’m In Love.

Wish era el nombre del disco en que aparece el tema donde la banda obtuvo un sonido más comercial que le permitió llegar a nuevos fans. Si bien no obtuvo buenas críticas fue un éxito de ventas.

Los sucesos del fin de semana que han conmocionado al país con la muerte de 21 personas en el archipiélago Juan Fernández. El país vuelve a ser tocada por una tragedia que golpea, y fuerte.

Como esas ¿casualidades? del Destino, justo hoy lunes un grande de la música como Freddie Mercury hubiera cumplido 65 años, siendo incluso homenajeado con un doodle de Google.

A principios de los ’90 un tema nos llegaba a fondo, siendo muy ad-hoc para los momentos que hoy vive el país y que fue, musicalmente hablando, la despedida oficial de Mercury de este mundo. Me refiero a The Show Must Go On.

Luego de la muerte de Kurt Cobain parecía que el rock entraría en un largo sopor pero el brit pop llegaría para quedarse un buen rato, siendo uno de esos discos eternos el que los invito a recordar este lunes: Parklife de Blur.

Mientras el grunge comenzaba a desaparecer de los ránkings, el britpop con Blur y Oasis a la cabeza se cnvertía en la nueva corriente musical que dominaba el mundo, además de ser una tendencia que nos marcaba en la moda y otros aspectos de la vida.

Ugly Kid Joe fue una banda que en Chile, al menos, tuvo como única canción de éxito a Everything About You, la cual sonó bastante en las radios de esa época.

El tema apareció en su disco début America’s Least Wanted y obtuvo una buena posición en los rankings internacionales a tal punto que fue utilizada en la banda sonora de la película «El mundo según Wayne».

Gracias a este disco début pudieron realizar una gira mundial por varios paises del mundo siendo, incluso, teloneros de Ozzy Osbourne. Para 1995 grabaron Menace to Sobriety, su segundo disco. Si bien tuvo una buena recepción en crítica y fans no le fue bien en los rankigs norteamericanos al punto que Mercury Records terminó el contrato con la banda tiempo después.

A fines de 1996 lanzaron Motel California, disco grabado de manera independiente por el sello que ellos mismos crearon, pero las ventas fueron bajísimas lo que llevó a la disolución de la banda a fines de 1997.

Para comenzar con energía esta semana los invito a escuchar este buen tema rockero de principios de los ’90. Más de algún recuerdo les va a traer.

En los comienzos de los años ’90 varias bandas tuvieron su minuto de gloria para luego no saberse mucho más de ellas, al menos en Chile. Una de estas es EMF que nos dejó un tema que se convirtió en un clásico de aquella etapa: Unbelievable.

La banda estaba formada por James Atkin, Ian Dench, Derry Brownson, Mark Decloedt, Richard March, Tim Stephens y Phil Cleary. Ese año lanzaron su disco debút llamado Schubert Dip que los llevó a los primeros lugares de los rankings en USA y Europa.

Si te preguntas de donde viene el nombre EMF es la abreviación de Epsom Mad Funkers, el nombre de un grupo de fans de la banda New Order. Pero antes de conocerse bien el origen del nombre se pensaba en que la abreviación significaba Electro Motive Force o Ecstasy Mother Fuckers, frases que aparecian en la cara B del single Unbelievable; el tema EMF.

Considerado una de los One Hit Wonders más importantes de los ’90, Unbelievable forma parte de la banda sonora de muchos de nosotros. Sin embargo, la banda no tuvo otro número 1 (en Chile yo recuerdo haber escuchado solo este tema de ellos) y terminó por separarse en 1995. Intentaron volver en el 2001 pero la reunión no duró demasiado.

Para quitar el frío nada mejor que poner a EMF a todo volumen y moverse. Creanme, se llenarán de energía tras escuchar este temazo noventero.
