Si hablamos de temas lentos uno pensaría que en la música realizada por grupos electrónicos ese tipo de canciones practicamente no aparecería. Sería como algo lejano a los que normalmente nos entregan. Pero siempre existen excepciones y una de esas es la que les muestro en el post de hoy.

Something About Us es un tema que forma parte del disco Discovery, lanzado al mercado el año 2001 por el grupo francés de música electrónica Duft Punk, el cual está formado por Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo y Thomas Bangalter.

Una característica de este disco es que en el año 2003, se unieron a Toei Animation, y bajo la supervisión de Leiji Matsumoto, dieron vida a la película Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, que no es otra cosa que una versión animada del disco, y que tiene como eje el secuestro y rescate de una banda de pop interestelar.

Something About Us es una canción con una letra corta, pero muy sencilla y  potente que la transformó en el tema de amor de Interstella 5555. Además fue el último single del disco Discovery que se lanzó al mercado. Para muchos una muestra de que el romanticismo no queda indiferente aunque la música esté realizada usando de preferencia computadores.

Si alguno de nosotros pensaba que la etapa de los lentos (o “blues”) se había terminado en los ’90, debo decirles que eso no es así. Si bien ya no es requisito que un solista o banda deba grabar un tema de este tipo como caballito de batalla, en los comienzo del siglo XXI, aún se siguen escribiendo buenos temas para bailar en pareja.

El de hoy es uno de esos. Apareció en el año 2007 interpretado por la canadiense Avril Lavigne, y forma parte de su disco The Best Damn Thing. Me refiero a la balada When You’re Gone.

Concebida como un tema que habla de “cuando estás con alguien a quien amas, y debes decir adios y todas esas pequeñas cosas que extrañas de el”, en palabras de la propia Avril. Aunque nunca lo ha confirmado existen rumores que la canción habría nacido inspirado por quien era en esos instantes su esposo, Deryck Whibley.

La cantante ha dicho que no trató de hacer una canción de amor, sino que un tema más bien lento y con sentimiento. Aunque revistas como Billboard han definido este tema como una “power ballad”.

En los rankings tuvo resultados dispares. Por ejemplo en Argentina llegó al número 1, mientras que en USA apenas alcanzó a ser número 24 en el ranking del Billboard.

En el día de hoy, cuando la música que más escucha (comercialmente hablando) parece haber abandonado las baladas, se agradecen temas como estos. Así que les presento a Avril Lavigne con When You’re Gone.

En esta última revisión musical del 2009 (donde varios temas se van a quedar afuera por motivos de espacio), la elegida en este lunes es una canción que apareció en los rankings a mitad de año. Me refiero a Love Etc del duo inglés Pet Shop Boys.

Formando parte del disco Yes, lanzado entre marzo y abril en todo el mundo, Love Etc llama la atención por su video el cual es una interesante muestra de animación. Para la banda siginificó un nuevo número uno en los charts de música bailable, asi como buenas posiciones en los rankings de todo el mundo.

Escrita en conjunto con el team Xenomania, quienes también son los productores del tema, la canción es descrita por el duo como un himno que suena como nunca lo habian logrado anteriormente.

Pese a que no he escuchado el disco completo como para dar una opinión más acabada, Love Etc me parece un muy buen tema que demuestra que tenemos Pet Shop Boys para rato y que, de paso, la coloca como una de las buenas canciones que nos entregó el 2009.

En estas últimas dos semanas del año, revisaremos un par de canciones importantes de esta temporada. Y para comenzar, una canción que está, a mi juicio, entre las buenas del 2009: Wrong de Depeche Mode.

Perteneciente al disco Sounds Of The Universe, aparecido en abril de este año y que ha llevado a la banda de gira por el mundo, Chile incluido, en su Tour Of The Universe.

Wrong tuvo una muy buena recepción, principalmente en radios alternativas, siendo el primer single de un disco que ha recibido buenas críticas, con reseñas que lo dejan al nivel de Playing The Angel (2005)

Entonces no agrego más y los dejo con este muy buen tema del 2009, que ya se nos va: Wrong

Raras Canciones Buenas: PJ Harvey (con Thom Yorke) – This Mess We’re In (2000)

Puede que no le suene para nada el nombre de PJ Harvey, aunque si el de Thom Yorke, el vocalista de Radiohead. Pero, escucharlos juntos en un mismo tema? Por eso es una Rara Cancion Buena.

Perteneciente al disco del año 2000, Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea, uno de los discos más accesibles de PJ Harvey, pensando en que su carrera ha estado más relacionada con la música indie y no tan comercial (aunque de muy buena calidad).

Ya les contamos bastante del disco en este post, pero no es menor decir que PJ Harvey ha sido una gran influencia para muchas bandas alternativas, por lo que, creo, se hace indispensable conocer más de su musica.

Y, obviamente, esperamos contribuir a eso con este tema, el cual tiene un sonido más comercial que otras canciones de PJ Harvey. Y que mejor acompañante que Thom Yorke. Con ustedes This Mess We’re In.

Disco Eterno: Coldplay – A Rush Of Blood To The Head (2002)

El segundo álbum de Coldplay fue editado el 26 de Agosto del 2002, ha vendido más de 11 millones de copias hasta el momento, el 2003 ganó un Grammy por mejor álbum alternativo y el 2004 “Clocks” ganó un Grammy por Disco del Año.

Si bien ya con “Parachutes”, Coldplay había ganado cierto renombre en la escena musical, es con este disco con el que logra su gran alcance mundial, convirtiéndose en una de las bandas más populares del nuevo siglo. Además, el álbum permite al grupo relacionarse con campañas sociales y ecológicas y Chris Martin, líder y vocalista,  se vuelve la cara visible del grupo. En mi opinión es el mejor disco de la banda y el que  define su sonido particular.

“Politik” es una especie de llamado a los políticos actuales, como a cualquier persona, para abrir los ojos ante la problemática mundial. “In my place” es sobre una relación rota, en la que ambos cometieron errores y él espera que ella regrese. “God put a smile upon your face” cuestiona por un lado el destino final de nuestra vida (where do we go nobody knows) pero también muestra una visión optimista de nuestras cualidades (God gave you style and gave you grace). “The Scientist” nuevamente recurre a la pareja en problemas y apunta a un nuevo comienzo a pesar de lo difícil que pueda ser (Nobody said it was easy… take me back to the start).

“Clocks” reflexiona de lo rápido que a veces vivimos pegados al reloj y dejando de hacer algunas cosas importantes para nosotros. “Green eyes” puede ser dedicado a una mujer con la que él se siente apoyado y fortalecido (Honey you are a rock upon which I stand ) pero también puede referirse a una imagen religiosa ya que él puede llevar su carga de manera más fácil (I came here with a load and it feels so much lighter now I met you). “A rush of blood to the head” canción que da título al álbum, trata de recomenzar nuevamente la relación, destruir y borrar los errores cometidos (buy this place and burn it down) y buscar un nuevo inicio (Start as you mean to go on), aunque al final del tema, él parece asumir que finalmente ella no regresará (When am I gonna see that pretty face again?).
